Project Summary

Developing a flexible and open test environment where new traffic management/traveler information strategies can be tested in the field prior to full scale implementation is of critical importance in developing robust Intelligent Transportation Systems. The key component of such an open test environment is the traffic detection system that is flexible enough to work with various control strategies. Responding to the needs to develop such a test bed, Minnesota Department of Transportation has initiated the development of the I-394 laboratory by installing a set of machine-vision detection systems with 38 cameras at a section of the I-394 freeway. The proposed research will develop the I-394 laboratory into the test bed that will take full advantage of state of the art technology and implement traffic control, information and incident detection algorithms. The test bed will be also used to perform trade analysis and conduct demonstrations of processing level strategies, communication technologies and traffic sensing and processing techniques. The components of the laboratory system will include a traffic operations center, graphical user interface, real-time freeway control and incident detection/management, and communications. The proposed research will be implemented in two phases. Phase I will activate the 1-394 laboratory for testing and validation of traffic flow models. Specific objectives of Phase I are as follows: 1) Concept definition and design of the test environment. 2) Connection between the I-394 machine-vision detection systems and the ITS laboratory at the ITS Institute. 3) Development of the software to operate the machine-vision detection systems at the ITS laboratory.
